Submerged arc furnace (SAF) is mainly used for the production of ferroalloys. Generally, in submerged arc furnace, carbon is used as reducing agent to reduce ore, producing ferroalloy, metallic silicon, carbide, corundum phosphor, pig iron and etc. Additionally, the units produce calcium carbide and calcium silicon for secondary metallurgy in steel production. And finally, this technology is ideal for reprocessing / recycling residues from the iron and steel industry.
Here is an overview of the main applications. When submerged arc furnace is in operation, furnace burden is added into the furnace and electrode is submerged in the burden. With the heat from the electric arc and that from the resistance of the burden, submerged and reduction process is carried out, from which the reduced molten metal and slag accumulate at the bottom and are tapped at regular intervals. The process is continuous. The products include: ferrosilicon, calcium silicon, barium ferrosilicon, silica-alumina and other silicon series of composite ferroalloy, silicon metal, high carbon ferromanganese, ferromanganese-silicon, high carbon ferrochrome, silica chromium, aluminum silicon, pig iron etc.
