Detailed Description
Because of the effect of either L-methionine or N-acetyl-L-methionine supplementation on body weight, we feel that it is most meaningful to express the spleen weights as the ratio of organ weight to total body weight. We have recorded these data in table 3. Hypertrophy of the spleen was first evident when rats were supplemented with 1.2% L-methionine or the equivalent level of N-acetyl-L-methionine (P<0.05). Further additions of L-methionine up to 1.8% or the equivalent level of N-acetyl-L-methionine produced a progressive linear increase in spleen hypertrophy. Supplements beyond these levels of either L-methionine or N-acetyl-L-methionine resulted in only slight additional increases in spleen-tobody weight ratios. This lack of effect of either L-methionine or N-acetyl-L-methionine on hematocrit, in spite of the accumulation of spleen iron suggests a compensation for any anemia which might have developed. That is, the L-methionine or N-acetyl-L-methionine causes an accelerated red blood cell destruction which results in spleen iron accumulation and spleen hypertrophy. However, the rat is able to compensate by increasing iron absorption and red blood cell production. A lot of studies emphasize the narrow range of beneficial levels of both L-methionine and N-acetyl-L-methionine. We have concluded that the effects of excessive methionine or N-acetyl-L-methionine are expressed as a depression of growth and food consumption, spleen hypertrophy, and spleen iron accumulation in growing rats. We also conclude that Af-acetyl-L-methionine at high levels of supplementation is less detrimental than L-methionine as evidenced by weight gain.
