Mechanism of emission
The structure of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) consists of a sealed glass tube with
electrodes at both ends. The inside surface of the tube is coated with a fluorescent substance
(Phosphor) ; the tube is then evacuated and re-filled with inert gas and a slight amount of mercury.
When a high-voltage current is applied to the electrodes, resulting arc causes the gas to ionize,
creating ultraviolet light.
These ultraviolet rays in turn excite the phosphor, which emits light according to the composition of
the phosphor coating of the tube.
