Ribavirin is an antiviral medicine prescribed to patients with severe Respiratory Syncytial Viral infection. It is given to infants, children and patients with risk of heart diseases. Ribavirin is also prescribed to patients with chronic hepatitis C infection along with the drug Peginterferon.
Ribavirin is an antiviral drug. It does not have the needed effect on the virus when used alone. Thus, it needs to be taken along with an interferon alfa product. Do not take Ribavirin if one is allergic to it or if one is already taking didanosine, have liver problems, pregnant or if a man has a pregnant sexual partner.
Ribavirin can cause severe birth defects as well as lead to death of the fetus. It can even harm a fetus, if conceived when the father was using Ribavirin. Thus, make sure one uses an effective birth control method when using this drug. Breastfeeding women should also exert caution when taking this drug and nursing a baby. One may be prone to anemia when using Ribavirin as it may decrease red blood cell count.
Before taking Ribavirin, inform the doctor of any underlying health conditions. This includes kidney diseases, liver diseases, pancreatic problems, sarcoidosis, hemolytic anemia, diabetes, HIV, thyroid problems, new or worsening eye problems, undergone an organ transplantation, suffered from a heart attack, high blood pressure, used medicines for hepatitis C previously, etc.
Ribavirin should be taken exactly as advised by the doctor. Do not take more or less than advised. Stop the drug immediately once the prescription period is completed. Take the tablet with food and drink plenty of fluids when taking Ribavirin.
If you miss a dose, take it immediately after you remember about it. In case it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed. In case of overdose, call the doctor immediately. One may develop bruising, bleeding, no urination, pain in the arm, nausea, sweating, etc.
