Halogen lamp is gas-filled tungsten-filament lamp. Atmospheres of halogen lamp comprise an inert gas with about 0.1% to 1.0% of a halogen vapor added. The inert gas may be krypton, xenon, nitrogen, argon, or a mixture (e.g., nitrogen/argon or argon/krypton). The gas pressure is 7~8 ATM and bulb temperature is 250~600°C. The lamp is made of fused quartz (silica, SiO2), high-silica glass or aluminosilicate "hard" glass to withstand the high operating pressures and temperatures. To maintain the high temperatures and pressures required for operation of the halogen cycle, halogen lamps are smaller and have thicker walls. The bulb shapes are usually tubular(T) and sometimes globular(G). Bulb materials must be capable of withstanding high operating temperatures and pressures. Fused quartz (silica, SiO2) is usually used because it can easily operate at wall temperatures as high as 1100°C.
