RNA interference (RNAi) is a phenomenon in which expression of an individual gene can be specifically silenced by introducing a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), that is homologous to the gene into cells, and it is receiving attention as the most powerful tool for reverse genetics in the post-genome era. The inactivation of gene function by reverse genetics is important in the study gene function, and may also have an impact on the treatment of diseases initiated and/or perpetuated by aberrant gene expression. Recently, the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi) has offered an additional way to inhibit the expression of virtually any gene in living cells. RNAi is a powerful technique for sequence-specific gene silencing in a wide variety of organisms. Potentially, this process has major implications for target validation and drug development.
