The ICE (Interchangeable Cooling Environment) cools and pumps ordinary tap water through a variety of different attachments to cool for rehabilitation, temporary preservation of cadavers and for therapeutic use to improve outcomes following cardiac arrest or stroke. The ICE system should be an integral part of your protocol for Hyperthermia. Many studies have been done on the effects of cooling the body shortly after cardiac arrest or stroke establishing how long-term cooling significantly improves outcomes. Traditionally was accomplished with ice packs, block ice, and invasive procedures with saline and/or a cooler which uses Gluteraldehyde. The EMS Innovations ICE unit provides the user con-trolled cooling by utilization of a thermostat. Actual patient temperature monitoring should be used in conjunction with the ICE Unit. The temperature of the cooling fluid (water) can be set to an exact parameter. An LCD panel on the top of the unit provides feedback of temperature regulation and an indication of the flow of the water through the system.
