Detailed Description
Amazon.com Hands-On Review The E61 is one of Nokia's new business-centric Eseries of devices, and is the first Nokia phone to sport the popular "BlackBerry" form factor that has been so popular in the United States for years. As an Eseries device, the E61 comes complete with remote management capabilities, a SIP compatible Voice Over IP client, as well as support for a large number of push email vendor solutions. The E61 also runs the 3rd edition of the Nokia S60 user interface over top of the Symbian v9.1 operating system, which means that there is a lot of 3rd party application support for the device. The sleek E61 is all business. The two most dominating features of the E61 are its large 320x240 pixel display and its equally spacious QWERTY keyboard. The landscape formatted QVGA display is bright and colorful - capable of displaying up to 16 million different color shades. The keyboard makes use of somewhat loose fitting plastic keys that, while seeming a bit cheap at first, are actually quite comfortable to use. Each key is decently large, and there are a number of shift, function, and other keys that allow the user quick access to letters, numbers, symbols, and even foreign characters. Above the keypad are a number of other keys, including two large softkeys, a pair of equally large call send/end keys, a fine joystick, and dedicated menu and messaging app buttons. As a business oriented device, it is not all that surprising that the Nokia E61 lacks a digital camera of any sort. It does, however, sport a very nice music player application and a miniSD memory card slot. The music player has the ability to sort tracks based on things like artist and album, and allows for the creation of playlists from a PC or directly on the phone. The E61's wonderful web browser is capable of properly rendering just about any site on the internet, thanks to full CSS and javascript support. The browser supports zooming in and out, easy panning around large pages, and a visual back/forward function. The E61's QWERTY keyboard is easy to type on. One of the E61's most compelling traits is its support for most of the major wireless networks. For starters, the E61 has fantastic 802.11g WiFi support, for extra fast web browsing and email access. When out of the home or office, EDGE and UMTS 3G data (where available) are also at the user's disposal. In terms of shorter range connections, Bluetooth, USB, and infrared are also available. The E61's large display and vast capabilities come at a price in terms of power, necessitating the use of a large and somewhat heavy 1500mAh battery in order to obtain its very respectable 8 hours of talk time in our GSM band tests. The E61 can also be used on European UMTS 3G networks as well, but will get slightly less talk time performance when doing so. Audio quality was a bit above average when used in regular calls, but the built-in speakerphone function is one of the best we have ever tested. While the early E61 that we tested had some quirks with its IMAP email support when configured for automatic download, most corporate users will likely be very pleased with the device's support for the following push email based systems: BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Nokia Business Center, Seven Mobile Mail, Seven Always-On Mail, and Visto Mobile. The MMS and SMS systems are top notch, and worked as well as the rest of the messaging applications. Pros: Good keyboard Large display WiFI, UMTS, EDGE, Bluetooth Cons: Somewhat large/heavy A few IMAP email quirks With its wide array of connectivity and messaging options, comfortable keyboard, and large display, the Nokia E61 is the perfect companion for corporate raiders busy home office types alike. The built-in applications are all very well done, and the availability of plenty of 3rd party apps will help each individual user fill in any perceived gaps in functionality. In short, the Nokia E61 is an excellent choice for a business centric mobile phone. --Reviewed by Michael Oryl, editor in chief of www.MobileBurn.com Amazon.com Product Description BlackBerry lovers, there's a new device on the block, and it packs all the functionality of a quad-band Nokia smartphone into a design that business users have grown to love. The device packs Wi-Fi, EDGE and UMTS high speed data capabilities, Bluetooth, a miniSD memory card slot, and support for just about every email protocol you can think of -- including BlackBerry Connect and Goodlink. All this and much more is packed into a thin, sleek, and stylish exterior that's perfect for the discerning professional. Design The E61 goes with a tried and true design that makes it easy to communicate at a moment's notice. The large, 320 x 240 screen supports a whopping 16.7 million colors, while a QWERTY keyboard just below the screen makes typing out emails, SMS messages, notes, presentations, and more a breeze. A center "thumb stick" allows you to quickly navigate the E61's menus and features, while soft keys on either side of the stick make it easy to quickly access important phone and productivity functions -- all of which make the E61 a snap to use one-handed. On the bottom of the phone, you'll find a Nokia "Pop-Port" for connecting accessories, such as the included wired headset. The port also serves as a USB 2.0-compatible data port when used with the included USB adapter. The phone's charging port and infrared sensor are also located on the bottom of the phone. Under the battery cover, you'll find a hot-swappable miniSD slot, as well. The device ships with 75 MB of internal memory, as well as a 64 MB miniSD card. Calling Features The E61's address book is only limited by the amount of available memory, and it can store multiple phone numbers, as well as physical and email addresses. Meanwhile, the E61's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, while speaker-independent voice dialing makes it easy to dial numbers with the sound of your voice. Polyphonic ringtones are included, and you can use your favorite music or recorded voices as ringtones. Plus, picture IDs let you assign specific ringtones to particular callers. If you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate mode, too. And, of course, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible. Messaging, Internet and Tools With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the E61 can send picture, video and text messages. Instant messaging is also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3, IMAP, and SMTP protocols, as well as Microsoft Office-based email attachments. A robust set of push email and wireless synchronization solutions are provided, including Activesync for Exchange and Outlook, Intellisync, BlackBerry Connect, and Goodlink. Getting on the Internet is easy with the E61. It supports the GPRS data protocol, as well as high-speed EDGE wireless data service and UMTS (UMTS/WCDMA 2100 Mhz) 3G wireless broadband. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can also be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. And don't forget the E61's Wi-Fi capability, which makes high-speed data access a breeze via an 802.11g hotspot. Just the right dimensions for mobile productivity. The E61's innovative built-in browser, one of many enhancements included with the device's new Symbian operating system -- known as Series 60 9.1 Version 3 -- offers full HTML viewing as well as support for page zooming, CSS, javascript and other technologies that will bring you very close to a desktop PC browsing experience. The E61 supports PC synchronization standards via USB or Bluetooth, which means you can manage and synchronize contacts, calendars and other data with your PC. Nokia's PC Suite application makes this process a breeze. A number of handy software tools are bundled with the device, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, and an alarm clock. Productivity tools bundled with the E61 include a word processor, a presentation viewer/editor, a spreadsheet viewer/editor, PDF viewer, and a zip file manager. The office applications are compatible with the most common features of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (MS Office 97 or later). Robust contact and calendar applications are also included. Entertainment You can mix your business with quite a bit of pleasure, as the E61 supports playback of MP3 and AAC audio files, as well as streaming and stored video files. Connect a Pop-Port stereo headset, load up your tunes and videos to a memory card, and you've got some serious entertainment in your hand. Picture effects and custom screensavers, as well as backgrounds and themes, can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the E61 is a powerful gaming companion with support for Java and Symbian games. Vital Statistics The Nokia E61 weighs 5 ounces and measures 4.61 x 2.74 x 0.55 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7 hours of digital talk time, and up to 264 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 2100 MHz UMTS frequencies. Note that 2100 Mhz UMTS service is not offered by any U.S. carrier.
