Sialon,as a silicon nitride solid solution,it is firstly found by Kayama Hirokazu of Japan and Jack U.K in 70’s of last century.Its name calls by english as Silicon Aluminum Oxynitride and abbreviation for Sialon.
One of the commonest forms is β-Sialon,the chemical formula Si6-zAlzOzN8-z.As Si4+inside of Si3N4 replaced by Al3+,also the N3- equal numbers replaced by O2- to keep charges balance,thus,the ratio of anions to cations can preserve in 4:3 relation between.Z is the number of Al3+ replaced Si4+ or O2- replaced N3- in the per unit cell.
For past 30 years,in the development stage of Sialon,as a result of the higher price of the raw materials such as Si3N4, AlN, etc,SiAlON has ever been restricted to utilize in large scale productions.In order to reduce the production costs of Sialon and expedite the industrialized process,The method of carboth-ermal reduction nitridation CRN that what applied by cheap raw materials to synthesize Sialon powders has always been researched and focusing on by some countries.However,the typical difficulties are from technological processes and equipments,many problems of the industrialized manufacture have not been completely overcome, the journey of CRN for synthesizing Sialon will become longer and longer.
SiAlON had been utilized in aluminium industry for over 10 years. The new-type ceramic material had received much praise as it came to the industry applications.
Sialon could be made into any shape and has little tolerances. Such material hold tow material features up a body,either Silicon Nitride performance（high-strength, high-hardness, strong impact fracture toughness, and high thermal conductivity）,or alumina performance（corrosion resistance, chemical inertness, heat-resistance, oxidation resistance）.
Most of the refractory materials can only meet one or two performances at high temperature, e.g. mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, thermal shock, or electrical insulation environment.This is Sialon can take care of all of the above special circumstances requested and application temperature around 1250℃ steadily.
