Senna is a powerful cathartic used in the treatment of constipation, working through a stimulation of intestinal peristalsis. Senna is vital to recognize, however, that constipation is frequently caused by other factors and not a cause in itself. Thus, it is wise to isolate and treat the cause of chronic constipation.
Cassia Senna is native to tropical Africa and cultivated in Egypt.
Uses of Senna
, Ease acute constipation. The primary use of senna is to ease severe cases of constipation. Senna is an ingredient in several prescription laxative medications. Anthraquinone in senna causes intense intestinal contractions. Senna can be taken for acute constipation as a supplement, or as a tea made with the leaves or the pods of the senna plant.
Alleviate irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Taking a milder dose of senna in the form of tea can alleviate irritable bowel syndrome. Symptoms of this chronic condition include hard, difficult-to-pass, and infrequent bowel movements. Other symptoms are straining and cramping when trying to have a bowel movement or being only able to eliminate a very small amount at a time.
Relieve symptoms of dyspepsia. By improving gastric juices, senna can have beneficial effect on persons who suffer from dyspepsia. Symptoms of dyspepsia include indigestion, belching, bloating, uncomfortable fullness after eating and nausea.
Use senna to aid weight loss. A liquid diet of senna tea can cause quick weight loss. It stimulates the colon, leading to the increased metabolism of fat.
Treat skin disorders. Historically, senna leaves were applied topically as a paste to cure skin diseases. Acne and ringworm were said to respond positively to treatment with the senna leaf
