The mangosteen fruit is known as the "Queen of Fruits", while durian (Durio spp.) is known as the "King of Fruits". Despite the name, this tree is not related to the mango. Medicinal Actions and Uses---Mangosteen is touted for its antioxidants, especially xanthones (a type of chemical in certain plants). Independent scientific research studies showed that Mangosteen contains more than 40 xanthones - roughly 20% of about 200 xanthones found in nature. The Mangosteen is the single, most abundant source of xanthones known to science. A number of these xanthones were demonstrated in scientific studies to be even more potent antioxidant than vitamins C and E, two of the most powerful antioxidants found in food. They were also shown in scientific and pharmacological studies to possess a variety of immune-system-boosting and healing properties, such as supporting microbiological balance, helping the immune system, improving joint flexibility, and providing mental support. Some proponents claim that it can help diarrhea, infections, tuberculosis, and a host of other illnesses. Although there is no evidence that mangosteen juice, puree, or bark is effective as a treatment for cancer, its fruit has been shown to be rich in antioxidants. Very early studies in the lab suggest that it may have promise as a treatment to be applied to the skin for acne. Early small studies in the lab and on rats suggest that further research should be done to find out if it can help with cancer prevention in humans. Like many other plants, extracts of mangosteen have shown in lab tests that they can stop certain bacteria and fungi from growing. One lab study suggested that mangosteen extract inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria. It has not been tested on people to find out if it helps acne in humans. In a lab dish, it also showed activity that slowed the growth of certain cancer cells. A small study on cancer inhibition in rats suggested that the rind of the mangosteen might reduce the risk of cancer cell growth in the bowel. However, mangosteens cancer inhibitory effect has not been tested in humans. Constituents--- Independent scientific research studies showed that Mangos teen contains more than 40 xanthones - roughly 20% of about 200 xanthones found in nature. The Mangosteen is the single, most abundant source of xanthones known to science. The hull of the fruit of the mangosteen tree contains four inhibitors of plant Ca(2+)-dependent protein kinase. Two of these inhibitors have been purified and identified as the xanthones 1,3,6-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-2,8-bis(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one (mangostin), which was identified as a xanthone in mangosteen in the mid-1800s and found to have anti-inflammatory effects in rats in the late 1970s, and 1,3,6,7- tetrahydroxy- 2,8-bis (3-methyl-2-butenyl) -9H -xanthen -9-one (gamma-mangostin). Both xanthones also inhibit avian myosin light chain kinase and rat liver cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase. This is the first report of inhibition of plant and animal second messenger-regulated protein kinases by plant-derived xanthones. As part of ongoing research on cancer chemopreventive agents from botanical dietary supplements, mangosteen was selected for detailed study. Repeated chromatography of a CH2Cl2 - soluble extract of the pericarp led to the isolation of two new highly oxygenated prenylated xanthones, 8-hydroxycudraxanthone G (1) and 7-methoxy-2- (3-methyl-2-butenyl)-8 -(3-methyl-2-oxo-3- butenyl) -1,3,6-trihydroxyxanthone (mangostingone) (2), together with 12 known xanthones, cudraxanthone G (3), 8-deoxygartanin (4), garcimangosone B (5), garcinone D (6), garcinone E (7), gartanin (8), 1-isomangostin (9), alpha-mangostin (10), gamma-mangostin (11), mangostinone (12), smeathxanthone A (13), and tovophyllin A (14). The structures of compounds 1 and 2 were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis. Except for compound 2, which was isolated as a minor component, the antioxidant activities of all isolates were determined using authentic and morpholinosydnonimine -derived peroxynitrite methods, and compounds 1, 8, 10, 11, and 13 were the most active. Alpha-mangostin (10) inhibited 7,12-dimethylbenz [alpha] anthracene-induced preneoplastic lesions in a mouse mammary organ culture assay with an IC50 of 1.0 microg/mL (2.44 microM). Are there any possible problems or complications? ---No ill effects have been reported to date. Relying on this type of treatment alone, and avoiding conventional medical care, may have serious health consequences. Product Actions and Properties: Anti-aging Anti-cancer Anti-bacterial Support microbiological balance, Help the immune system, Improve joint flexibility, Provide mental support, Help diarrhea, Help infections, Help tuberculosis
