Introduction:
Astragulus is one of the most prized herbs in Oriental medicine, is actually a member of the pea family. It was first mentioned in the 2,000-year-old classic herbal reference, Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. It’s Chinese name, huang-qi, means “yellow leader” because it is a superior tonic to invigorate vital energy (qi). Astragalus is also a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms as well as raise white blood cell counts.
Active Ingredients:

§Saponins: astraglosides I, II, and IV, isoastragalosde I, 3-o-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-cycloastragnol, etc.
§Triterpene glycosides: brachyosides A, B, and C, and cyclocephaloside II, astrachrysoside A
§Sterols: daucosterol and beta-sitosterol
§Fatty acids
§Isoflavonoid compounds: astrasieversianin XV (II), 7,2’-dihydroxy-3’,4’-dimethoxy-isoflavane-7-o-beta-D-glucoside (III)
Pharmacology:
§Antiviral: It inhibits the replication of coxsackie B-3 virus (CB3V)-RNA, a virus that causes myocarditis in animal models (Peng, 1995).
§Antioxidant: It inhibits lipid peroxidation in rat heart mitochondria (Hong, 1994).
§Cardiovascular effects: It increases cardiac output in patients with angina pectoris (Lei, 1994). Astragaluoside IV improves left ventricular end-diastolic volume, left ventricular end-systolic volume and slows heart rate in heart failure. The compoumd also alleviates chest distress and dyspnea associated with heart failure (Luo, 1995).
