Detailed Description
Honey bush tea is made from the Cyclopia plant, which is found in the mountains of the Cape region of South Africa. In Spring, the plant grows yellow flowers which have the aroma of honey, and these are followed by flat brown seed pods. There are 23 different species of the Cyclopia species, but only two are used for commercial tea production, Cyclopia Intermedia and Cyclopia Subternata. The leaves, stems, and flowers are processed to obtain honey bush tea which brews to a deep dark amber colour. Honey bush tea has a smooth, fruity, sweet taste without the typical bite found in most green and black teas. This is because it contains virtually no tannin. Like our green rooibos tea, we also offer unoxidised green honey bush tea. The natural antioxidants in this tea have been retained, maximising the health benefits. Honey bush tea contains no additives, preservatives or colorants. Each cup contains essential minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium and zinc. Honey bush tea does not contain any caffeine, which makes it especially suited for night-time consumption and for children. Like rooibos, honey bush tea prevents one of the first steps in the potential onset of cancer, mutagenesis. This is the process whereby the DNA of a cell is altered by excessive exposure to mutagens (such as cigarette smoke, sunlight or chemical substances such as hydrogen peroxide). Honey bush contains powerful antioxidants, which clean up free radicals. These are highly reactive molecules that damage your body's cells, leading to disease. Antioxidants bind to free radicals, inactivating them before they cause harm. The antioxidants in honey bush include flavones, isoflavones, coumestans, luteolin, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, polyphenols, and xanthones. Honey bush tea also stimulates the liver enzymes that break down cancer-causing substances when they enter the body.
