Generally, sculptures in China can be traced back to 4000 BC. Originally, engraving came from pottery and stone implement in primitive societies, which was the forefathers of the art of engraving in China. The excavated clay works in China’s Zhejiang province has had a history of more than 7000 years. Primarily, Chinese ancient sculptures concentrated on the following subjects as mausoleum (tomb) engraving, religious engraving, labour-scene and folk-customs engraving. Categories of the art consist of round engraving, basso-relievo, memorial engraving, desktop-objects-engraving, construction and instrument decoration engraving, etc. Many kinds of materials could be adopted in the art; besides bronze, stones, brick, mud, pottery, other materials like wood, jade, tusks, bamboo, bones are also usable.
