It consists of wearresistant particles (the hard phase WC) bonded together bysoft ductile phase(Co). In applications which demand a high levelof hardness combined with strength and toughness,tungsten carbide (WC) is the normal choice for the hardphase. Cobalt (Co) is usually chosen for the binder phase. The grain size of the WC can be made to vary from 0.1m to 10 m, over which fine control can be exerted. Thegrain size for a particular application is an importantfactortogether with the cobalt content, determinethe mechanical properties of the particular gradecomposition.
