Carbetocin is a long-acting synthetic hormone medication used to prevent excessive bleeding (postpartum hemorrhage) after childbirth. It works by mimicking the effects of oxytocin, causing the uterus to contract strongly and reducing blood loss. Given as a single intramuscular or intravenous injection immediately after delivery, carbetocin is particularly useful in settings where ongoing oxytocin infusion is less practical. Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, headache, and flushing.
